Let’s face it – probably one of the toughest things about battling acne is the toll it can take on your self image and confidence. As you’re trying different cleansers, dietary changes, and visits to the doctor, how do you keep on a good face – literally and figuratively – as you go about your life?
Fighting acne is just that – a fight, and sometimes even if you’re seeing positive results, it may not be happening as fast as you’d like. So how can you stay confident and positive even when your skin isn’t looking the best? Here are a few ideas:
1 – Wear a little Makeup
Just a little – don’t go overboard with foundation to try to cover up all your spots or scars. Use a light layer of foundation, then use a concealer just in spots where you need it. Less is more. Your goal should be to even out your complexion, not cake it on like costume makeup. [1] And yes, this can work for guys, too. A little bit of the right kind of concealer on some of your biggest blemishes can even out your skin, and you won’t look like you’re wearing girl’s makeup. Just steer clear of cosmetics with known irritants.
2 – Be Patient
Nobody wants to hear that advice. But it’s true. Overcoming acne is a marathon, not a sprint. Some changes might be gradual. It’s easy to get frustrated with slow results, even if you know you’re doing the right kind of treatment. Keeping a positive attitude about the whole process will make it that much easier to bear, even on the hard days.
3 – Know that You’re Doing Your Best
If you’re doing your research, eating right, listening to your doctor, and taking care of your skin – then, as the previous point says, be patient. Don’t be too hard on yourself. Know that you’re doing your best. Don’t compare yourself to other people – whether it’s comparing your skin to theirs, or comparing your self-care habits to theirs. If you’re doing everything you can, then be confident in that. It may be a battle, but it’s your battle, and you’re fighting it – and winning it – your own way.
4 – Live your Life
Don’t let acne keep you from doing what you want to do. We get it – breakouts can make you want to hide in your bedroom for the next month or so. Don’t let your acne control you! Be confident in your skin care (point #3), put on a little makeup (point #1), and go out and live your life.
5 – Smile!
It really is true that everyone is beautiful when they smile! A genuine smile goes a long way in getting a positive response out of other people, and in boosting your own confidence, too. If you’re wearing a big happy smile, people don’t see a face covered with pimples – they see a person who is excited about life, a person who is kind and open, a person who is fun to be around. Smile and let people see the real you!
Don’t let acne get you down! Stay strong in your fight! You’ve got this!
